Orchids IX

This orchid is known as fu-ran in Japanese where fu is for wind and ran, orchid. Neofinetia falcata, an orchid that is originated from Japan is also called fukiran - orchid of wealth and nobles - which is famous during Shogun era amongst the samurai warriors.

My sensei, however, is a very artistic person when comes to orchid. He simply added another type of orchid in the same pot and if we do not look carefully, it might miss us. On the lower part of the furan root, there is Bulbophyllum japanicum (Makino) or in Japanese, miyamamugi-ran or mountain wheat orchid.

I surely would never noticed the small, red in colour flower if he do not come and asked me to look closely.

Last week, new types of orchids came to the lab and both were of Japan origins; Sediria japonica or know as nagoran in Japanese and Epipactis thunbergii or kakiran.

Nagoran means nago orchid because it was first discovered in Nago city of Okinawa Island while kakiran, persimmon orchid because the colour of it flower is similar to the persimmon colour.

During the last one month, many types of orchid made their ways to the lab but I was too occupied with the works to take time-off and smell the roses. But, for a few clicks of camera's button, there is always a time for that. (^_~).....

Orchids VI

I have to admit that I know nothing of orchids. Any imagination about them that I have in mind shall be re-arrange since yesterday. I met with a dwarf Amitostigma keiskei which height is less then 10cm. However, since they grow in alpine climate of Asian, no wonder I never met them before.

At first I thought it was a bouquet of plastick flowers, which turned out to be a vase of an orchid plant named Lycaste aromatica. The flower really stand for it's name since the whole room was full with the floral fragrance, sweet. 

It really perk my mood to see this flower first thing on Monday morning up on the usual place after nothing was there for a few days. Besides, I was so down thinking about the numbers of killing that I need to carry out during this one month....really sound like a contract killer here.

(Top) Shiran (Bletilla striata) is an indigeniuos orchid of Japan, a lady's slipper type (a pouch) but this one is a mutated plant with three slipper-shaped pouches. Interesting! (^_~)...

Orchids III

The latest orchids in the room are another version of Lady’s slipper, Formosa’s Lady’s slipper (Cypripedium formosanum) and Dendrobium moniliforme ‘miyabi’.

Yesterday, a new orchid plant known as Pleione formosana or Taiwan Pleione came-in to replaced the older ones because their flowers started to fall off.
